Just as we cannot make a Picasso or a Wayne Gretzky, a Mozart or an Oscar Peterson, so we cannot make a good teacher. All we can do is sit back in admiration when we see one in action.

It is true that some people are born teachers but, like talented artists and athletes, even they benefit from training. And we obviously cannot put a born teacher in every classroom. There are simply not enough of them to go around. In the 1920s H.G. Wells said that the way to solve this problem was to make the world’s best teachers available in all classrooms through film and radio. Today we are told that the computer is the answer. But even if this turns out to be correct, which seems unlikely, we will still need teachers, and if they are not born, they will have to be made. Any attempt to improve schools must pay serious attention to teacher training.
